Why do they break?
Derailleur hangers are sacrificial parts designed to break or deform instead of the bike frame. This kind of damage usually happens when a chain gets caught or the derailleur crashes into the spokes. It’s cheaper to replace a hanger than an entire frame, thus reducing / eliminating damage to the frame and drive train components. Get a spare so you’re not caught short on a ride!
Checked on the Specialized website and this item was listed as an alternative to fit my 2012 Tricross. My order was despatched promptly and recieved two days later. It appears to be identical to the original mech hanger that is fitted to the bike. So happy days.
Fixed my issue. Although my old hanger appeared straight when placed on a flat surface, it allowed the derailleur cage to contact the spokes. The new hanger fits the frame perfectly and resolved my shifting issues.
